John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced plans to hold a National Economic Dialogue within the first 120 days of his presidency if elected.
This dialogue will aim to develop a four-year fiscal consolidation program, which he identifies as a key component of his strategy to revitalize the economy.
Mahama shared these plans during the launch of the NDC 2024 manifesto on Saturday, August 24, in Winneba. He outlined several measures to support this economic initiative, including:
– Rationalizing taxes.
– Abolishing the E-levy, COVID levy, and a 10% levy on betting winnings.
– Reviewing import duties and levies on vehicles and equipment intended for industrial and agricultural use.
– Rationalizing port fees and charges.
– Implementing emergency measures to stabilize the Ghanaian cedi and the broader macroeconomy.
– Utilizing the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy to provide relief to consumers.
– Investigating the NPP’s Gold-for-Oil deal, which he described as opaque.
– Reviewing the Bank of Ghana’s Gold Purchase Programme.
– Restoring licenses to banks and financial institutions that were unjustly collapsed.
– Increasing local participation in the banking and financial sector.
– Ensuring that statutory funds, such as the GETFUND, NHIL, and Road Fund, are used for their intended purposes.
These measures reflect Mahama’s commitment to addressing the economic challenges facing the country and fostering a more stable financial environment.
