The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has promised to implement sustainable mining practices to tackle the environmental challenges associated with illegal mining (galamsey).
Addressing supporters in Akrokkeri within the Fomena Constituency on the third day of his six-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, Mahama underscored the importance of small-scale mining to the local economy. He reassured miners of his commitment to balancing environmental protection with livelihood enhancement.
“I know that here in Adansi, you deeply value small-scale mining. The NDC will bring policies to support small-scale miners and ensure the land is preserved for future generations,” Mahama affirmed.
He expressed concern over the devastating effects of illegal mining on Ghana’s natural resources and pledged to adopt environmentally friendly techniques. He further emphasized the need for land reclamation and other measures to restore degraded areas.
Mahama also urged voters to focus on competence rather than political loyalty in the upcoming elections, advocating for a leadership capable of addressing the nation’s pressing issues.
“The challenges we face demand a leader who prioritizes solutions over rhetoric. Let us choose wisely,” he advised.
The Fomena Constituency, a hub of mining activities, has long grappled with environmental and economic sustainability issues. Mahama’s pledges resonated strongly with local communities eager for effective and responsible mining practices.
