President-elect John Dramani Mahama has reappointed his long-time confidant, Julius Debrah, as Chief of Staff, as he prepares to take office on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

This marks a return for Debrah, who held the same position during Mahama’s previous administration from 2015 to 2017.

The announcement, made via a press release signed by Special Aide Felix Kwakye Ofosu, listed key appointments to the Office of the President. Debrah’s reappointment underscores Mahama’s reliance on trusted hands as he prepares to lead Ghana again after defeating incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo in the December 2024 polls.

Debrah, who served as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development before his tenure as Chief of Staff, is known for his organizational acumen and loyalty to Mahama. His reinstatement signals continuity and a steady hand as Mahama embarks on his second stint as President.

Other appointees include Dr. Callistus Mahama as Executive Secretary to the President and Prosper Douglas Bani, former Chief of Staff, as Head of the Interim Security Taskforce. Dr. Valerie Sawyer will serve as Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs, while Augustus Goosie Tanoh has been tasked with advising on the 24-hour economy and export development.

Marietta Appiah Brew, who served as Attorney General under Mahama’s earlier administration, has been named Legal Counsel to the President, with Felix Kwakye Ofosu serving as Acting Spokesperson.

The appointments take effect immediately after Mahama’s swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, marking the end of Nana Akufo-Addo’s two-term presidency.

Mahama’s choice to reappoint Debrah has been widely interpreted as a strategic move to tap into his experience and ensure a seamless transition as the new administration tackles Ghana’s pressing economic and governance challenges.
