John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated his commitment to abolishing the teacher licensure exams, planning to integrate them into the final exams for teacher trainees.

During the NDC’s manifesto launch in Winneba, Mahama outlined his vision for improving teacher welfare, including a new initiative to address accommodation issues. He introduced the “Teacher Dabre” project, which aims to ensure that every new school built by the government includes housing for teachers.

“No new classroom block will be constructed without providing accommodation for teachers,” Mahama stated, emphasizing the importance of supporting teachers in their communities.

He also pledged to prioritize the provision of housing for teachers in existing schools that currently lack these facilities. “We’ll abolish teacher licensure exams and integrate it into the licensing process in their final year exams. We’ll institute the teacher ‘Dabre’ project, and what this means is that any new school we are building must be accompanied by accommodation for teachers.”

Mahama stressed the urgency of this initiative, saying, “Every new classroom block must have teacher accommodation, and we’ll also accelerate providing accommodation for existing schools that do not have them. This will be the teacher ‘Dabre,’ which means where a teacher will sleep program.”
