Former President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged trainee nurses to prioritize securing stable employment over relying on allowances. Speaking to a group of trainee nurses on Saturday, Mahama acknowledged their financial difficulties but emphasized that long-term job security is more valuable than temporary financial aid.
Mahama assured the nurses that his administration would focus on job creation within the healthcare sector to provide stable and fulfilling careers for healthcare professionals. “We are aware of the issues facing trainee nurses, which is why, during our time in government, we proposed replacing your allowances with a student loan system. Our goal was to create more employment opportunities for you. What matters most is not the allowance but securing a job upon graduation,” he said.
He criticized the current administration for failing to fulfill its promise of paying allowances, noting, “Someone promised to pay the allowances, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a false promise. Nurses are owed nearly 30 months of arrears, and some have left school without receiving their due payments. Others may leave school soon without their allowances.”
Mahama also committed to addressing the issue if re-elected. “I promise that if I return to office, we will complete the hospitals that have been abandoned by the current government. We will also continue and complete the Agenda 111 hospitals to create more opportunities for you when you graduate. This election is about choosing between Ghana and the NPP,” he added.
