John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, recently expressed his appreciation to Zug-Raan Asigri Abugrago Azorka, the Paramount Chief of Bawku Traditional Area, along with the chiefs, queen mothers, and people of Kusaug. He thanked them for their warm reception and active involvement in his #Mahama4Change2024 campaign in the Upper East Region.
On Facebook, Mr. Mahama shared his vision for Ghana, stating, “Together, as a united country, we will build the Ghana we want, lifting our people out of poverty, strengthening agriculture by introducing farmer services centers, and improving healthcare & social infrastructure.”
Mr. Mahama criticized the seat of government, formerly known as Flagstaff House and now Jubilee House, calling it the “headquarters of misinformation.” He alleged that this is where false stories are fabricated.
During a campaign event in Binduri on August 4, Mr. Mahama challenged the president to address the issue of misinformation starting from his own residence. He recounted a recent visit to the Bawku Naba’s palace, where discussions about the creation of a new region were held. Mahama noted that constitutional processes, such as evaluating economic viability, land size, population, presenting a petition, and setting up a commission of inquiry, are required for such a move.
He expressed frustration that, despite his explanations, a false news story had misrepresented his statements and wrongly positioned him against the Mamprugu state. “Yesterday, I went to Bawku Naba’s palace and he spoke about the issue of carving out another region to encompass the six constituencies in this area. I explained that there were constitutional processes that needed to be gone through and that the criteria were 1, economic viability, 2, land size, and 3, population. Aside from that, a petition must be presented, and a commission of inquiry must be set up to look at the feasibility of creating a region. Then in the evening, I saw a fake news story misrepresenting completely what I said and trying to put me against the Mamprugu state. I never mentioned Mamprugu yesterday at all; I was just comparing land size and region and economic viability.”
Mr. Mahama also criticized the president’s stance on misinformation, pointing out that “the president comes with misinformation and he used the Agyapadie document as an example of misinformation but probably what the president doesn’t know is that his office, the Flagstaff House, is the headquarters of misinformation. That is where the fake stories, misrepresent what people have said and feed it into social media; his own office is where they do that, so he should clean his house first before he talks about misinformation in other places.”
