A man has reportedly poisoned himself to death hours after inflicting machete wounds on his wife, Dailymailgh can report.

Joseph Amankwah, 47, attacked his wife, 32-year-old Diana Abena Agyapong on Saturday, January 11, at their Boneagya home in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region, police told reporters Sunday.

Witnesses recount that the couple were met fighting and they were separated.

However, upon returning from their farm, the neighbours came to find the woman in a pool of blood.

With support from town folks, Abena was sent to the St. Michael’s Catholic Hospital, about 30minutes drive from the community — but was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Hours later the suspect after committing the act was found unconscious after he drank a liquid substance suspected to be poisoned.

He was rushed to the Kuntanase Government Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead by medics at about 19:00 hrs later when police officers went to the hospital.

His body has since been deposited at the St. Michael’s Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy, police said in a statement.

Police have since visited the family as part of their investigations.

Residents in the community have become unsettled over the matter as they appealed for a police post to help salvage the nuisance in the community.

Issues of domestic violence is prevalent in Ghana, owing in part to a deep cultural belief that it is socially acceptable for men to discipline their wives physically.

Around one in three women in the West African nation are likely to experience domestic violence.
