A man has drowned while swimming in a dam located in the West Gonja District of the Savannah Region, police have confirmed.

An emergency crew was called to the 1Village 1Dam project site in the Sori No 1 electoral area at about 3pm Wednesday after the man got into difficulty shortly after entering the water.

The victim, 22-year-old Gariba Amadu, was on a routine trip with herds of cattle when the incident happened.

An opinion leader Seidu A Fuseini told DailymailGh.com that it took half-an-hour to recover the body.

“There were these herdsmen who brought their cattle to the dam and wanted to bath in the dam. He suddenly disappeared moments later and so his younger brother who was with him hurriedly informed neighbours around”.

He further added, “it is the first time such incident happened and so we will have to sensitize residents in the area about the dangers of the facility”.

Some residents in the farming community who were at the scene expressed shock while others were busily reaching out to family members of the deceased to confirm the information.

At the time of filing this report the body has been given to the family for burial according to the customs of Islam.
