A Ghanaian man pretending to be a lawyer for many years has been charged for deceiving a public officer.

The 39-year-old man named only as Kyei Baffour was arrested earlier this week as he was representing his client in a murder case at the Nyinahin Ciricuit Court in the Ashanti Region.

A police commander at Nyinahin James Amekah told dailymailgh.com the man who appeared before the Vera Victoria Akonu Court could not articulate his legal argument and was challenged by the presiding judge to produce his licence.

“So she asked for his licence number and he have it to the Magistrate last week. And yesterday [Wednesday] he appeared before the court as counsel for a suspect murderer and unknown to him the judge had forwarded the license to the General Legal Council and the Ghana Bar Association. So the response was that the man was a fake lawyer and anytime he came to court he should be arrested”, the police chief explained.

“According to him he had passed a law entrance exam in Ghana but he discontinued due to personal reasons so we are going to court to pray for a remand and write officially to the General Legal Council and the Ghana Bar Association for an official report so that we can use that report to prosecute him”, he added.

Local media reports say the man told police that he had studied law at a University in California but had yet to be called to the bar in Ghana.

Despite this, he has reportedly won several cases.
