Manchester United FC legend, Rio Ferdinand has named Ghana legend Michael Essien among the top 5 African Players to grace the English Premier League.
The former English international was reacting to Liverpool FC player Sadio Mane’s move to Bayern München few days ago.
He described his choice of players in his top five African players to play in the English top-flight after excluding Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Nwanko Kanu and Riyad Mahrez.
Mane’s Liverpool teammate and Player of the Season, Mohamed Salah also made the list alongside Yaya Toure, formerly of Manchester City.
He posted on Twitter, “I’m going…” Ferdinand teased. “In no particular order; Didier Drogba, Salah, Mane, Yaya Toure, Michael Essien.” Ferdinand also added: “Raaaaaa this is hard yenoooo. Riyad Mahrez won some trophies. I loved Jay Jay Okocha also… mad player.”
Former Ghana International, Essien, spent nine years at Chelsea, winning the English Premier League FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League trophy before leaving the club.
Rio Ferdinand played several times against Essien including a champions league truimph over Chelsea in Moscow in 2008.
