A manhunt is underway for six Nigeriens, who reportedly escaped quarantine in Ghana’s Oti Region under unknown circumstances.

They were arrested at Kadjebi for attempting to use illegal routes to travel outside the country.

The foreigners were part of 37 commuters arrested at the countryside following the president’s directive on restrictive movement in the capital and Ashanti Regions earlier this month.

This comes days after a Nigerian man vacated his apartment in Northern Ghana, after he was tested positive for the virus. He was found by the police after a search.

The Nigeriens claimed that they were returning from Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region where business has been slow due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Accra-based JoyNews, reports the suspects could not be traced when health personnel went to their holding center to check on them.

According to the District Chief Executive of Kadjebi, Maxwell Asiedu, there is a high possibility the escapees are still in the area “because they left their belongings, bags. Their slippers and other things were still in the room.”

He narrated that the policeman on guard duty at the facility said he had stepped out to get an item in the area, but got back to meet their absence.

Mr. Asiedu pleaded with the public to volunteer information on the possible whereabouts of the Nigeriens, hinting that a search had been mounted to arrest them.

Oti Region has recorded 13 Coronavirus, bringing the number of regions with recorded cases to 12.

Early in March a Guinean national also escaped a holding center in Tamale in Ghana’s Northern Region.

She is yet to be found despite claims by a former deputy Health Minister that she had been recaptured in Accra.
