Over 360 nurses and midwives at the Manhyia District Hospital have been directed to law down their tools with immediate effect, its local union has confirmed.
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) gave this directive shortly after an emergency meeting with the nurses on Thursday (December 1).
The action is in response to a 72-hour ultimatum issued by the government to remove the embattled NSS Ashanti Region boss, Alex Opoku Mensah, after being captured verbally assaulting a nurse on duty when he waded into a misunderstanding between her and a doctor identified as his daughter.
The politician was subsequently suspended pending an outcome of an investigation by his employers.
But the GRNMA is not convinced. Ashanti Regional President Jones Afriyie Anto reveals there are attempts to sweep the matter under the carpet.
