Violent protests have followed the death of an assemblyman at Sogakope, a popular Ghanaian community in the Volta Region.

Angry residents for the second time blocked the main Accra-Aflao road at the Sogakope bridge to demand the arrest and prosecution of the assailants who murdered Marcus Mawutor Adzahli, the assemblyman for Sogakope South.

Residents of Sogakope on rampage

Mr Adzahli was shot and killed by unknown assailants Sunday dawn sparking widespread outrage in the community.

It was pretty chaotic in the community on Monday morning during a visit by the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa.

Dr Letsa had led a delegation to the town to commiserate with family of the deceased and to get a first hand information on the matter.

But the presence of the Chairman of the Volta Regional Security Council and his delegation will not calm the protesting residents.

They, thus want the police in the area to produce the suspects in three days.

“The regional minister is in town. They say they are holding a press conference. What will a press conference do for us? It doesn’t give us any clues. No solution, nothing,” one man was quoted to have complained.

The residents also reiterated their unhappiness with police conduct in the area.

“When there is an incident and they call them, they will never rush. Sometimes the rush and hide at the crime scene. They can’t shoot. sometimes they will say don’t have bullets in the gun which we can’t understand.”

This protester also demanded that “they send all [the police] away and bring new people from different places.”

Another resident said the community want some military presence in the area.

“We want soldiers. The police are not working. Let the soldiers come,” she said.

The assembly member, Marcus Mawutor Adzahli, who doubles as a mobile money merchant, was shot and killed at his residence early on Sunday morning.

The assailants, numbering about eight, reportedly stormed the victim’s house wielding guns and cement blocks whilst firing gunshots.

He was found with multiple bullet and stab wounds. His wife and child are also in critical condition at the District hospital.

Though no official information has been communicated to the media about arrests, police have tightened security in the area as they pursue the assailants.
