The Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region, Anthony K K Sam, died after testing positive for Covid-19, President Akufo-Addo has confirmed.

Addressing the nation on Sunday night, President Akufo-Addo said the Mayor died on Friday, June 12, describing him as “an old and valiant colleague in the struggle of the New Patriotic Party and in the work of the Akufo-Addo government.”

Affectionately called Egya Sam, the Mayor was very instrumental in enforcing social distancing protocols at Sekondi and Takoradi markets and was highly commended by many, including the President.

“May his soul rest in perfect peace in the bosom of the Almighty until the last day of Resurrection when we shall all meet again,” the President stated.

The Mayor was on admission at the University of Ghana Medical Center until his untimely death.

He is reported to have self-isolated after his driver reportedly tested positive for Covid-19.

Although his samples had been taken for testing, the Mayor continued to stir the affairs of the Western Region capital which is identified as an epicenter for the virus.
