The Minority in Parliament asserts that the proposed 24-hour economy plan by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) aims to address the economic turmoil caused by the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

The caucus argues that the Akufo-Addo government’s excessive borrowing has inflated the national debt to over GHC740 billion without delivering tangible benefits.

Eric Opoku, the Ranking Member of the Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs Committee, emphasized the need for the 24-hour economy as a solution. He remarked, “We have been reckless and irresponsible in our borrowing over the past seven years. From March 6, 1957, to January 7, 2017, Ghana’s total debt was GHC120 billion. In just the last seven years, this has surged to GHC742 billion, meaning we have borrowed GHC622 billion in that period alone—an unprecedented figure in our country’s history.”

To overcome this economic crisis, Opoku advocated for increased productivity. “We need to work harder. We used to work for 8 hours, but what we are proposing is to utilize 18 hours economically. We must make the most of every hour to improve our economic situation,” he added.
