The Minority Caucus has expressed serious concerns over the increasing prevalence of drug trafficking in Ghana under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

At a press briefing, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, stressed the importance of maintaining Ghana’s reputation as one of Africa’s most peaceful nations.

“Ghana in the past eight years had been ranked favourably by notable global organisations as the second most peaceful country in Africa in respect of crime rate and globally, ahead of Australia and Canada,” Rev. Fordjour stated.

He further warned, “It is therefore imperative that under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, Ghana continues to be safe and not degenerate into a safe haven for pirates, drug trafficking, and money laundering.”

Suspicious Aircraft Landings at Kotoka International Airport

The Minority Caucus also raised concerns over two recent suspicious flights—AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B—that landed at Kotoka International Airport from Gran Canaria, a region known for drug trafficking and money laundering. Intelligence reports suggest these flights carried suspected cocaine and cash.

The Minority has demanded full transparency regarding the cargo carried by these aircraft to ensure the security of Ghana’s airspace. They insist that the government must disclose the nature of the goods on board and take decisive action to prevent the country from becoming a hub for drug-related crimes.

Call for Government Accountability

The Minority Caucus has pledged to continue monitoring these developments and holding the government accountable. They emphasize the need for urgent measures to curb the rising incidents of drug trafficking and ensure that Ghana does not become a transit point for illicit activities.

They call for greater transparency, stronger security protocols, and international cooperation to tackle this growing threat, urging the government to act swiftly to protect Ghana’s reputation on the global stage.
