During the vetting of President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial nominees on Monday, January 13, the Minority in Parliament called on the Justice Minister-Designate, Dominic Ayine, to ensure thorough investigations and accountability for those involved in post-electoral violence.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about the growing threat such disturbances pose to Ghana’s democratic values, emphasizing the need for strong action in the wake of the December 7, 2024, general elections.
In his opening remarks, Afenyo-Markin stated, “The disturbing videos circulating show the severe threats these actions pose to our democracy. If confirmed, the Attorney General nominee must ensure thorough investigations and accountability for these violations, as no crime committed in pursuit of political power should go unpunished.”
His remarks were prompted by media reports and videos showing violent incidents, including attacks on government buildings, in the aftermath of the elections. Afenyo-Markin further underscored the importance of a fair and impartial judicial process, urging Ayine to prioritize investigating these incidents and prosecuting those responsible, regardless of their political affiliations.
The Minority leader stressed the significance of holding individuals accountable to safeguard the integrity and stability of Ghana’s democracy.
