Former Minority Chief Whip and MP for Asawase in the Ashanti Region Muntaka Mubarak has won his bid to defend his parliamentary seat in the upcoming 2024 general elections. This is the sixth consecutive time for the politician.

He polled 1063 votes beating his main contender Mubarick Masawudu who secured 735 votes.

The exercise was disrupted by heavy rains and at some point, characterised by chaotic scenes when supporters of both candidates engaged in near fisticuffs. A heavy police deployment was able to manage the situation.

There was a massive campaign to get Mr Muntaka out of office. Some delegates called for change describing Mr Muntaka as a low-performing lawmaker. But Mr Muntaka had earlier said he was confident of a resounding victory.

“When Nana Akufo-Addo came and said we should change what we are seeing, between 2016 and now, has it been better, or it has been worse? I don’t think that person [my contender] knows what he is saying”.

“I have been a distinguished parliamentarian, I have distinguished myself in the Ashanti Region, in Kumasi, and within the NDC, what do you want to change to, from better to worse? I know that I have diligently served my party, I have served my constituency and I know that by the grace of Allah, they will reward me this evening.”
