Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated that the government, despite current economic challenges, has successfully generated over 2 million jobs in the last 7 years.

According to Dr. Bawumia, available statistics indicate that this figure is the highest recorded since the country gained independence.

Addressing the launch of a cash disbursement for beneficiaries of the YOUSTART program in Accra, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia expressed the government’s commitment to continuing efforts to create more employment opportunities for the youth.

“What is remarkable is that, notwithstanding the global economic challenges, major disruptions due to COVID-19, and the Russia-Ukraine war, our government over the last seven years has created 2.1 million jobs. This is the highest number of jobs created by any government since the Fourth Republic,” he stated.

However, a report from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) indicates that one in every four young persons between the ages of 15 and 24 (24.2%) was not engaged in education, employment, or training during the third quarter of 2022. This represents 1.5 million individuals in that age group.

The report highlights regional disparities, with more than half of the youth in Accra (312,394), Ashanti (300,161), Eastern (131,341), and Central (129,182) regions. In 13 out of the 16 regions, over 20% of young persons aged 15 to 24 were not involved in education, employment, or training. The Eastern Region had the highest proportion of youth at 30.0%, while the Bono Region had the lowest at 14.5%.
