A Saturday dawn operation by the police led to the arrest of some 134 suspects at Changli in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale.
The suspects comprising 123 males and 11 females were arrested at the Tamale suburb which is less than half a kilometer from the Northern Regional Police Headquarters.
They are being profiled as police in the region open investigations into a case of assault on one of its officers.
The victim, a female police officer, was allegedly attacked on Wednesday, April 16, in the company of two other officers who were in the area to arrest a suspect believed to be involved in a theft case.
Northern Regional Police Crime Officer, Superintendent Otuo Acheampong said persons involved will be prosecuted.
“This arrest is as a result of intelligence that the police gathered that the suspects attacked the officers who were performing their lawful duties. Currently the suspects are in our custody; we are screening them and profiling them”, Superintendent Otuo Acheampong who condemned the attack, said.
Attacks on the police in the Northern Region appear to have surged.
Last year, a policewoman, Agartha Nana Nabin, was shot and killed by some unknown assailants in Tamale, sparking widespread fears among residents in the region.
Over 30 officers were killed in Ghana while performing their lawful duties between 2018 and 2019.
