Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, has commended Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the NPP’s running mate, for his recent apology regarding controversial remarks about Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Speaking on political affairs programme Newsfile on JoyNews Saturday, Aboagye described NAPO’s apology as a display of “maturity and leadership.”
According to Aboagye, NAPO’s willingness to apologise reflects positively on his character and underscores the importance of acknowledging his efforts rather than solely criticizing him.
“NAPO has apologized and I think that it shows the way,” Aboagye stated emphatically, underscoring that other political leaders, including former President Mahama, have made similar or more egregious statements without issuing apologies.
The controversy arose during Dr Opoku Prempeh’s unveiling ceremony in Kumasi on July 9, where he asserted that no Ghanaian president, including Dr Kwame Nkrumah has developed the nation like President Akufo-Addo.
These remarks sparked widespread criticism, prompting Dr. Opoku Prempeh to apologize after initially defending his stance.
However, not everyone sees NAPO’s apology as sufficient.
Kofi Bentil, Senior Vice President of IMANI-Africa, criticized Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s comments as politically inappropriate and disrespectful to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy. Bentil argued that such statements undermine allies and embolden opponents, suggesting they lack strategic foresight and emotional intelligence.
“Kwame Nkrumah is the greatest African of the last millennium,” Bentil asserted, emphasizing Nkrumah’s monumental impact and global stature.
“How do you take him on in those terms?” he questioned, highlighting the sensitivities and historical significance surrounding Nkrumah’s contributions to Ghana and Africa.
