Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as ‘Napo,’ has cautioned voters in the Ashanti Region against supporting the National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming the party has no genuine interest in the region’s development. According to him, any vote cast for the NDC would be wasted.
Speaking at a rally in Tweapeasi, located in the Odotobiri Constituency, Napo explained, “We vote in elections for development. If you cast your vote for a political party that does not prioritize your progress, then you have wasted that vote.”
As the Vice Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Napo stressed that only the NPP is committed to advancing the Ashanti Region’s growth and urged voters to back the party. “The NDC is not committed to the proper development of the Ashanti Region,” he stated during the rally.
Napo further expressed his disappointment with the NDC, noting that despite receiving substantial support from the Ashanti Region in past elections, the party continues to neglect the area when in power. He voiced his frustration, saying, “The number of votes that the NDC obtains from the Ashanti Region during elections is very huge, yet the NDC still considers Ashanti as a region that doesn’t support them.”
He added that under NDC governments, development in the Ashanti Region slows down, which he believes is intentional. “The progress of the country, notably the Ashanti Region, always comes to a standstill whenever the NDC occupies the seat of government, and I think it’s deliberate,” he remarked.
Dr. Prempeh accused the NDC of enacting policies that negatively impact the Ashanti Region, using the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as an example. He noted that while former President John Kufuor’s NPP administration introduced the NHIS to improve healthcare, the NDC, when in power, implemented capitation under the NHIS only in the Ashanti Region, which he described as a tactic to create hardship for the people.
“But immediately the NDC assumed the mantle of leadership, they fiendishly introduced capitation for NHIS only in the Ashanti Region just to create hardship for the innocent people,” Napo said, labeling it a deliberate move against the region.
Dr. Prempeh also referred to a past statement by former President John Mahama, in which Mahama said, “As for the people in the Ashanti Region, even if you construct their roads with gold, they will never appreciate.” Napo argued that this shows Mahama and the NDC have no plans for the region’s development.
He concluded by urging voters in the region not to support the NDC in the upcoming elections, saying, “Everything shows that the NDC and their leader, John Mahama, do not have the Ashanti Region in their plans. So please don’t vote for the NDC and waste your precious votes.”
