Thomas Ampem Nyarko, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Asuogyaman Constituency, has been accused of leading a violent mob into Akosombo to break into a house to attack and assault a group of young men and women, who he claims are “foreigners” and would not allow them to register in the ongoing voter registration.
Eyewitnesses recount Nyarko’s alarming commands to the mob: “Break the door, beat them, kill them.” Shockingly, these orders were carried out as the mob forcefully entered houses and assaulted the individuals inside, including young women, according to eyewitnesses.
The situation escalated further when it was revealed that some of the occupants were individuals arranged for accommodation by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Pius Enam Hadzide. These individuals, who hail from distant parts of the constituency, were reportedly assisting with party activities and registration efforts.
Nyarko’s targeting of these individuals, whom he suspected to be from the Volta region, sparked outrage from the NPP. Hadzide condemned Nyarko’s derogatory remarks towards Ewes, labeling them as “foreigners” and accusing Nyarko of ingratitude towards the community that had previously supported him.
Local residents expressed dismay at Nyarko’s actions, deeming them unfit for a member of parliament. The incident has underscored tensions in the Asuogyaman Constituency, raising concerns about political violence and discrimination.
