A group of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters gathered at the Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) to protest, blocking roads with an electricity pole.
The protest erupted after police denied them access to the EC office, where the collation of ballots for the hotly contested Ablekuma North Constituency was ongoing. The demonstrators demanded entry, insisting on the declaration of results for the fiercely contested race.
In response, police intervened swiftly, removing the roadblock and restoring order. However, tensions remained high as the frustrated supporters stayed outside the office, expressing dissatisfaction with the prolonged collation process, which has been delayed by disputes over the results.
Both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are claiming victory in the constituency. As of the previous day, results from 219 polling station pink sheets had been consolidated, with 61 still outstanding. Reports indicate that the EC has relied on pink sheets provided by the two parties to complete the tally after some official documents went missing.
The delay in announcing the final results has further escalated tensions, with both parties accusing each other of irregularities. To ensure security, a heavy police presence has been deployed to the collation center.
The Electoral Commission has yet to announce when the final results will be released, leaving protesters uncertain and increasing unrest in the area.
