The Supreme Court on Thursday in a unanimous decision has given the Electoral Commission the go ahead to compile a new electoral register ahead of the 2020 general elections.
The apex court chaired by Chief Justice, Kwesi Anin Yeboah, was ruling on the case filed by opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a citizen Mark Takyi-Banson.
It is, however, not clear if the ruling allows voter’s to use their old ID cards to register when the EC starts compiling the new register. The NDC after the ruling said the judgment went in their favour hence Ghanaians can use the old ID cards for the registration.
The NDC has promised to hold a press conference later in the day on the ruling.
The electoral management body has set June 30, 2020 to start the compilation of a new voter’s register.
A decision to compile a new voter roll has been met with fierce opposition from political parties, CSOs and members of the academia.
It also comes at a time President Akufo-Addo has been petitioned to get the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa removed from office.
