“New Survey: Dr. Bawumia emerges as top choice for 2024 presidential election

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and presidential hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December elections, has emerged as the favored presidential candidate among Ghanaian voters, according to a comprehensive survey led by renowned statistician and data management expert, Professor Smart Sarpong.

The survey, encompassing 59,547 voters from all 275 constituencies, conducted over 30 days in April 2024, revealed significant insights into voter preferences. Regarding party allegiance, 38.8% of respondents leaned towards the NDC, while 34.5% favored the NPP, with 23.1% remaining undecided.

In terms of presidential candidates, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured 38.9% support, closely trailed by Mr. John Mahama at 36.1%, with 21.4% undecided. Prof. Sarpong emphasized that Dr. Bawumia leads in several key regions, including Ahafo, Ashanti, Bono, Central, Eastern, North East, Western, and Western North, while other aspirants collectively garnered 3.6% support.

Highlighting regional trends, the survey noted a strong preference for Dr. Bawumia in the North East, with 60% support, whereas Mr. Mahama garnered 75.7% backing in the Volta region.

Professor Sarpong underscored the implications of the survey, indicating that while the NDC holds higher overall popularity (38.8%) than its candidate, Mr. Mahama (36.1%), Dr. Bawumia (38.9%) surpasses the NPP’s party popularity (34.5%). The NDC leads in eight regions, while the NPP leads in seven.

Furthermore, the survey identified competence, track record, and party affiliation as pivotal factors influencing the 2024 election, comprising 91.9% of voters’ decision-making criteria. Key issues demanding attention include unemployment, economic improvement, infrastructure, LGBTQ rights, corruption, and sanitation, reflecting voters’ concerns.
