The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced an additional payment of GH¢1,001,329.00 under its free dialysis program. This latest allocation covers dialysis services at six health facilities for July and August and includes an advance for September.
The six facilities benefiting from this payment are Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH), Efia Nkwanta Regional Hospital (ENRH), Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH), Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).
With this disbursement, the total funding for the free dialysis program since its launch in June has reached GH¢1,588,565.00. This payment ensures that the facilities are fully funded for the dialysis services provided in July and August, and it includes advance funds for September’s services.
The hospitals are responsible for managing the funds and reimbursing patients who paid out-of-pocket during July and August according to the approved rates for different categories.
Since the program’s inception, the NHIA’s financial support has significantly improved access to dialysis services, reducing the financial burden on patients and ensuring continuous care.
**Beneficiary Information**
To clarify, patients in the following categories will receive the specified support each month for this year:
– Patients aged 18 and under, and those 60 years and older, will receive up to eight free dialysis sessions per month under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) starting from June.
– Individuals aged 19 to 59 receiving treatment at KATH, CCTH, ENRH, HTH, and TTH (excluding KBTH) will be covered for two dialysis sessions per month.
– Adult patients (19 to 59 years) at KBTH will receive a subsidy for two dialysis sessions per month, with the NHIA covering 50% of the cost.
The NHIA extends its gratitude to the Government and Parliament for their ongoing support, which enables the provision of quality healthcare services.
**Background**
The NHIA recently introduced Free Dialysis Coverage for vulnerable patient categories, approved by Parliament as part of the NHIA’s Allocation Formula for 2024. This program, initiated in June, includes a total funding of GH¢4.4 million—GH¢2 million from the Allocation Formula and GH¢2.4 million from the NHIA’s Corporate Social Responsibility Budget for the fiscal year. This initiative aims to enhance the accessibility and affordability of dialysis treatment for patients in Ghana.
