The Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Ghana, specifically the National Identification Authority (NIA) Division, has announced an indefinite industrial action set to commence on Monday (10 June).
This decision reached unanimously during a council meeting on 23 May, comes after what the union describes as the government’s failure to negotiate and implement improved conditions of service for NIA staff.
The union had previously planned to strike on March 24, 2024, but postponed the action following the intervention of the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations.
The postponement was contingent on the government and the management of NIA facilitating negotiations and implementing better conditions of service for the staff.
However, the union claims that the government has not shown good faith in the negotiation process, prompting the decision to proceed with the strike.
“All union members are hereby notified that, until our conditions of Service become a priority to the Government and Management, and these administrative blunders are fully rectified (Completion and implementation of our CBA, Implementation of the approved Scheme of Service), we shall not return to the office”, a statement issued by the Union leadership read.
