The National Labour Commission (NLC) has summoned leaders of striking pre-tertiary teacher unions to a meeting on Wednesday (9 November 2022).

This follows a letter to the Commission by the Labour and Employment Minister seeking its intervention as the government races against time to get the protesting teachers back to the classrooms.

The teacher unions declared a sit-down strike on November 4, in protest of the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service. They believe Dr. Nkansah does not have a satisfactory teaching background.

Several meetings between the Unions and the government have ended in a stalemate.

The Commission hopes Wednesday’s meeting will address all outstanding issues. The meeting which would see representation from the Ministry of Education, leaders of the teacher union, and other stakeholders.
