The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has issued a warning to commercial drivers to avoid refueling their vehicles while passengers are on board. According to the NPA, this practice poses significant health risks as passengers are exposed to harmful chemicals.

At a recent sensitization event held by the NPA in Cape Coast, Mr. Michael Opoku-Obiri, the Central Regional Manager, highlighted the dangers of refueling with passengers inside. He pointed out that inhaling toxic fumes from gasoline, which contains harmful substances like benzene, can have severe health consequences. Benzene is a known carcinogen, and its fumes can easily infiltrate vehicles through open windows or doors.

Mr. Opoku-Obiri explained that such exposure can lead to health problems, including nausea, dizziness, and respiratory issues. This is particularly concerning for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly. He stressed the importance of ensuring that vehicles are free of passengers during refueling to mitigate these risks and safeguard public health.
