The National Peace Council (NPC) and the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) have strongly condemned the acts of vandalism that occurred in Damongo, Savannah Region. These incidents involved the burning of the Damongo Municipal Electoral Commission (EC) office by enraged youth, reportedly frustrated over delays in the declaration of election results.

The arson caused extensive damage to the EC office and its contents. According to eyewitness accounts, the youth, driven by frustration over the prolonged wait for election results, stormed the office and set it on fire. Authorities have since apprehended the suspects involved in the incident.

In a joint statement, the NPC and WANEP expressed their concern, stating: “The National Peace Council (NPC), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), and other partners in the Election Situation Room are aware of reports that the Electoral Commission (EC) office and collation centre in Damango, Savannah Region, has been vandalised and set ablaze.”

The statement further emphasized the importance of maintaining order at collation centres and urged political supporters to refrain from interfering in the electoral process. “It is essential that political supporters withdraw from the collation centres and allow their accredited agents to observe the collation process,” the NPC said. “The NPC calls on party leaders to make a public call on their supporters to withdraw from collation centres.”

The NPC also appealed for calm and encouraged all stakeholders to respect the role of the Electoral Commission in ensuring a credible electoral process. “The NPC calls on all sides to allow Electoral Commission personnel to carry out their duties with professionalism and integrity in order to deliver a free, fair and transparent election.”

This incident underscores the need for patience and adherence to due process during elections to uphold peace and democratic principles.
