Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of the Dr. Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) foresaw their defeat in the 2024 elections long before voting day.

In an interview on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Akomea disclosed that internal polling conducted by the party in February 2024 showed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama, holding a significant lead.

“In February and March, the NDC was leading by about 10 percentage points, which was quite concerning,” Akomea admitted.

However, he noted that the margin had narrowed in subsequent months, giving the party a glimmer of hope. “By September, October, it had come down to about 2. And so we were very confident. It was a new momentum, so we knew that there was going to be a lot of apathy, a lot of disgruntlement among our supporters,” he explained.

Despite the optimism generated by the closing gap, the final results aligned with earlier predictions, leaving the party to reflect on its performance.

Akomea emphasized the importance of investigating voter turnout, which he believes significantly impacted the outcome. “Anything else would just be a projection and so on. So we knew that the monthly poll showed us clearly [Mahama’s victory], and for a massive 2 million people to stay away, it’s really massive and we have to find out why,” he said.

On December 9, 2024, Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, announced John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the presidential election. Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total ballots cast, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia came in second with 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.

The significant difference in voter turnout and the wide margin of victory have prompted the NPP to investigate the reasons behind their loss. The party aims to better understand voter sentiments and address the issues that led to their defeat.
