The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its leadership team for the 9th Parliament, outlining the party’s approach to managing legislative affairs in the upcoming session.
The leadership structure includes Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader, Patricia Apiagyei as Deputy Minority Leader, Frank Annoh-Dompreh as Chief Whip, Habib Iddrisu as First Deputy Minority Whip, and Davies Opoku as Second Deputy Minority Whip. This lineup reflects the party’s focus on fostering cohesion and strengthening its parliamentary presence.
In a statement following the announcement, the NPP revealed plans to meet with its Members of Parliament-elect to brief them on their roles and responsibilities. “This is an essential step in ensuring that our MPs are well-prepared for the official opening of the 9th Parliament,” the party noted.
The new leadership faces significant challenges after the NPP’s major electoral losses in the 2024 general elections. The party saw its representation drop from 137 seats in the 8th Parliament to just 81 in the 9th Parliament, a loss of over 50 seats. Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured more than 180 seats, becoming the majority party.
As the NPP adjusts to its new role in opposition, its leadership will be pivotal in shaping strategies and influencing legislative priorities. The party emphasized its commitment to effective parliamentary management, despite the shift in political dynamics.
