The National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will meet on Thursday (2 January 2025) to discuss important issues following the party’s loss in the 2024 general election, sources have confirmed to dailymailgh.com.
This will be the first NEC meeting since the NPP’s major defeat in the 7 December elections. The meeting will take place at Accra’s Alisa Hotel, the source disclosed.
The loss has forced the party to reflect deeply and plan for the future as it prepares to take on its new role as the minority in Parliament.
According to sources, one key topic on the agenda is deciding on the leadership team for the NPP in the 9th Parliament.
Joseph Osei Owusu, the Member of Parliament for Bekwai and the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, is one of the key voices in the ongoing debate about the NPP’s next steps.
He and other party leaders have called for Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the current Majority Leader, to stay in a leadership position. Many think Afenyo-Markin’s experience, political skills, and ability to unite the party make him a strong choice to serve as the NPP’s Minority Leader in the next Parliament.
The decision on who will lead the Minority in Parliament is expected to spark serious discussion, as it will affect how the party shows strength, unity, and influence in the 9th Parliament.
The NEC will also look at other important issues during their meeting, such as why the party lost the elections, how to rebuild party structures, and ways to reconnect with grassroots supporters.
