Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his delight at the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) calling off its strike and resuming academic activities at the University of Ghana.
His remarks come in the wake of a press release urging the swift resumption of academic work at public universities, reflecting a deep concern for the welfare of students amidst the strike’s disruption.
“It was a great delight to receive the news that UTAG has called off its strike,” Mustapha declared, adding, “I am exceedingly happy with this development and doff my hat for UTAG and salute them.”
His enthusiasm underscores the significance of this resolution, especially given the academic challenges posed by the protracted strike, which had halted classes and created uncertainty for many students.
On October 28, 2024, Mustapha had released a statement advocating for the return to academic activities, emphasizing that his appeal was made in the interest of the students.
“I was mindful of the academic work and also their constitutional right to vote since most of the students registered on campus,” he explained.
He highlighted the intersection of education and civic engagement, noting that a prolonged strike could hinder students’ ability to participate fully in the democratic process, particularly as the December elections approach.
Recognizing the concerns of both students and faculty members regarding the potential impact of a continued strike on the academic calendar, Mustapha stated, “I have had fruitful discussions with some executives of UTAG and members who expressed grave worry over the continuation of the strike as it had the propensity to dislocate the realigned academic calendar.”
His engagement with UTAG leadership reflects a collaborative approach to resolving the challenges faced by the educational sector, emphasizing the importance of dialogue between students, faculty, and political leaders.
“Once again, I wish to express my profound gratitude to UTAG and its executives for their show of good faith, fidelity, and commitment to Ghanaian students. The NPP youth wing says Ayeekoo,” he affirmed, signaling a hopeful path forward for both students and educators as the academic year resumes.
