Some concerned delegates of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asante Akyem North Constituency in the Ashanti Region have rejected an album said to have been put up for the June 2020, primaries.
According to the group, the album as they had seen it, was in favour of the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Andy Appiah Kubi.
The group claims that the names of some 145 polling station executives have been deleted from the 519-member albums and replaced them with people they describe as “alien” to the polling stations.
At a press conference at Agogo last Monday, the leader of the group, Kwabena Frimpong, accused the Constituency Chairman, Mr Samson Agyei of being the brain behind the act.
“What we are witnessing today is an attempt by our constituency executives and our current Member of Parliament, Andy Appiah Kubi to destroy the party’s foundation thereby dwindling the electoral fortunes of our party in future elections,” Kwabena Frimpong alleged.
He continued: “It is sad to note that, our polling station executives whose names have been removed have been replaced with people who are alien to these polling stations with some even not registered voters in our constituency. How can someone who is not a registered voter in our constituency and at the same time does not even stay in that polling station area be made a party executive in our great party?”
The group said to avoid any confusion, the 2018 album which was used to elect the incumbent MP, should be maintained.
“We are calling on our National executives to revert this anomaly for peace to prevail in the parliamentary primaries,” Kwabena Frimpong said adding: “We are also respectfully calling on Nananom in the Asante Akyem North enclave to as a matter of urgency come in to avert this impending calamity come the 20th of June 2020.”
Attempts to reach the Constituency Chairman and MP for their reactions proved futile.
The NPP will hold its parliamentary primaries this weekend. Even ahead of the event, there have been widespread agitations among delegates and MP aspirants who accuse top hierarchy of the party of attempts to delist their names from the contest.
In the Offinso South Constituency for instance, some delegates performed rituals in the Offin River to register their protest against party executives for disqualifying their preferred aspirant.
They contend that the sitting MP, Abdallah Bandah has failed the Constituency and needs to be removed.
