The Pentecost Men’s Ministry (PEMEM) in the OBUASI Area has kicked off a proactive road safety campaign to impart crucial knowledge on traffic rules and regulations to drivers and passengers.
Launched at the OBUASI Central Lorry Station on Saturday, November 18, 2023, the campaign aims to mitigate road accidents and fatalities in the area. Its primary focus is to educate drivers, motorcyclists, commuters, and the general public on the significance of adhering to road safety regulations.
Under the theme “Because the Lord has need of it,” the campaign involves the distribution of informative flyers, stickers, and reflectors to drivers and passengers, contributing to the broader goal of reducing road traffic crashes in OBUASI and its environs.
This initiative aligns with the ministry’s commitment to social responsibility, aiming not only to save lives but also to promote the gospel.
Citing a report from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), alarming statistics were revealed, indicating 1,233 recorded crashes involving 2,099 vehicles and 186 deaths in July 2023.
Additionally, the report disclosed a 30.07% increase in deaths resulting from road crashes during that period. December of the previous year saw 202 fatalities, with 1,441 injuries and 245 pedestrian knockdowns reported. The month recorded 1,285 crashes involving 2,225 vehicles.
Pastor Benjamin Sarpong Mensah, leader of PEMEM in the Obuasi Area, expressed gratitude for the church’s active participation in the awareness campaign, emphasizing the responsibility of the church to educate the public on road safety and promote responsible driving habits. He commended local authorities and the media for their efforts in addressing this crucial issue.
Pastor Mensah stressed the need for collaborative efforts to combat road accidents, emphasizing the Church’s role as a faith-based organization and key stakeholder in the Municipality. He called for the Church to lead discussions on ensuring safety on the roads, especially with the Christmas festivities approaching.
Officials from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), NADMO, National Road Safety Commission, Ghana Fire Service, DVLA, and the Obuasi Municipal Assembly joined forces with the Men’s Ministry to sensitize motorists at the Horsey Park Lorry Terminal in Obuasi.
Kwasi Agyenim Boateng, the Ashanti Regional Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), commended the Men’s Ministry of the Church of Pentecost for spearheading the campaign to educate road users on measures crucial for road safety.
He announced plans for the NRSC, in collaboration with the MTTD and DVLA, to intensify road safety campaigns toward an accident-free Christmas. Boateng advised drivers to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulations during this period.
