With Ghana still very much in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic, the latest edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has lacked the magnitude of crowds that have ignited the event in recent years.
But even before the competition’s business end kicks in, and despite the relatively little fanfare, the NSMQ is still generating excitement — and not just for the usual reasons. It has always been a platform for celebrating some of the finest minds in Ghana’s second-cycle institutions, yes, but contestants from the Agogo State College turned it — for a day, at least — into a fashion exhibition.
Their green shirts, bright enough already, sparkled even more when tucked into classy suits — garnished with embroidery of the students’ names on the lapels of their jackets, and of intricate designs at the back — all over matching shoes. It really would have been a shame had they not won their Ashanti Region preliminary stage contest on Thursday. Dressed to ‘kill’ as they were, though, the College triumphed — with double the points tally of Islamic Senior High School (25), and five points clear of Kumasi Senior High Technical School (45).
Talk about winning in style!
We’ll probably see more of this from them as the competition progresses and – who knows? – other schools might just take a cue, too.
For now, enjoy the view.
