AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi mine, historically the economic backbone of the Obuasi community, has faced efforts to reduce the town’s over-dependence on the mining company.

The introduction of the Obuasi trade show in 2019, a collaborative initiative by the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, AngloGold Ashanti, and the Obuasi East District, has been recognized as a pivotal intervention to diversify the local economy through trade.

“The Trauma Hospital, which is nearing completion, will bring many people to Obuasi to access quality healthcare. Coupled with the existing KNUST-Obuasi campus, which has already attracted many people to Obuasi, there is the potential for expanding the economy,” highlighted Elijah Adansi-Bonah, Chief Executive of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly.

The trade show, slated for December 21st to 25th, has garnered substantial interest from business owners, signifying a positive shift in economic activity within Obuasi. A recent 2-day capacity-building workshop sponsored by the Obuasi Municipal Assembly focused on costing, pricing, and customer service, aiming to equip participants with skills to enhance their business operations.

“The Trauma Hospital, which is nearing completion, will bring many people to Obuasi to access quality healthcare. Coupled with the existing KNUST-Obuasi campus, which has already attracted many people to Obuasi, there is the potential for expanding the economy,” added Adansi-Bonah.

While acknowledging the positive strides, Adansi-Bonah encouraged residents to embrace business opportunities, emphasizing that the anticipated economic expansion and improved security situation make Obuasi an attractive investment destination.

Participants in the training program commended the organizers for the positive impact of the trade show on their businesses. They reported improved business outcomes since joining the trade show, attributing the success to the platform and the capacity-building workshops.
