At least five people were arrested when angry residents ‘unlawfully’ blocked portions of the Kumasi-Techiman highway in protest.
Friday’s action against reckless driving, was triggered by the recent death of a 14-year-old girl, adding to the frustrations residents endured by ongoing accidents.
Military and police intervention dispersed the crowd, which had taken over the Offinso-Sakam stretch, highlighting the urgent need for road safety measures.
An Assembly Member Ibrahim Yogo stressed the community’s futile attempts to install speed ramps.
“I have written letters to the Assembly, notifying the MCE of the need to mount speed ramps here but that has yet materialized. So, yesterday (Thursday) the accident infuriated the youth who launched this protest. In fact I had asked them to exercise restrained they wouldn’t listen until I called the MCE who also deployed police and military reinforcement”, Yogo explained.
“For now five people have been arrested and they in custody at Offinso. The protest serves as a stark reminder of the urgent action required to prevent further tragedies on the perilous highway because the deaths are one-too-many”, he added.
The road has since been cleared to traffic while the youth plans to hold a press conference over the issue in the coming days.
