The campaign of Maame Afia Akoto, an aspiring parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Okaikwei North Constituency is taking a nosedive as delegates condemn her modus operandi of sponsoring social media attacks on her opponents.
The Okaikwei North constituency, which is originally a safe seat for the NPP, was snatched away by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) following cracks and acrimony within the elephant party ahead of the 2020 elections. The delegates believe that Afia Akoto is embarking on same trajectory, which will leave the party worse off.
“There are a lot of things I cannot say in public, but the fake promises are one too many. She promised one of us – a 37-year-old gentleman called Dusty – recruitment in the police service. Word on the street has it that they did false medicals and that is creating a lot of issues,” a delegate, who is familiar with the issue said.
Afia Akoto, a former deputy chief executive of MASLOC, has also come under fire over her campaign of name calling and mudslinging.
“We don’t want a candidate who will divide us. We have been here before and this time we want to entreat our executives to call out candidates who will break the rules. I admire Afia Akoto but her messages lack depth because she seems to be much interested in just attacking her opponents,” another delegate, who pleaded anonymity said.
Unconfirmed reports making rounds in Okaikwei North constituency is that some influential delegates who initially had a soft spot for Afia Akoto are gradually pulling out from her camp, and joining the camps of the other contestants after using the health condition of her opponent Kofi Nyarko against him as she tours the wards to canvass for votes.
