A one-and-half-year-old boy got drowned in a well while playing with his siblings at Atasamanso, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when the victim accidentally slipped and fell into the partially covered well when he attempted to mount on it.
The mother of the victim, Serwaa Abrafi, named his son as Nana Yaw and told the police that her child was rescued at about half-an-hour and rushed to the Atasamanso hospital, but was confirmed dead on arrival by medics.
The body of the deceased was later taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for preservation and autopsy. Many sympathizers and family members had rushed to the scene when correspondent Jonathan Ofori visited the scene.
The grieving mother was spotted wailing as some family members consoled her. While police described the incident as an “unnatural death”, a family friend who did not want to mention her name described the scene as a “bad omen”.
Manhole swallows boy, 7, at Pakyi
A similar incident occurred on April 24, after a seven-year-old boy died, falling into a manhole that was under construction and full of water.
The child, identified only as Divine Isaac, was playing with his friends close to his house in Pakyi #2, in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region when he accidentally fell into the narrow ditch.
The victim was rescued minutes later and rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, but was declared dead by medics shortly.
Concerns have been raised about the safety of children in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic as the world continues to grapple with the virus.
