A murder investigation has been opened after a 22-year-old man was knifed to death at a popular brothel in Kumasi, Ghana’s largest city.

Police in the Ashanti region have detained three persons in connection with the Thursday night scuffle.

They have been named as 18-year-old Adomako Nyamekye, Augustine Adu, 19 —both Ghanaians and Chucku Emeka, a 47-year-old Nigerian.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased, identified as Akugri Liman, reportedly engaged in a heated exchange with one of the sex workers after he refused to pay for the services.

Called to the scene, Chukwu Emeka and Adomako Nyamekye —both described by the police as “pimps” for the sex worker, pounced on the deceased stabbing him in the process.

Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Godwin Ahianyo who briefed the media on Friday said some angry youth launched a reprisal attack as they set about 30 wooden structures ablaze.

“Later one Augustine Adu Okine as a way reprisal also led some youth in the area to set about 30 wooden structures belonging to the alleges sex workers on fire”.

“Officials from the Ghana National Fire were called to put out the fire…” , narrated ASP Godwin Ahianyo who added that all three persons are in police custody.

The police spokesperson said that efforts are being made to get the alleged sex worker arrested.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for autopsy.

Ghanaian laws frown on commercial sex activities but it is still prevalent in the West African country.

High rates of unemployment and poverty in Ghana are believed to be causing growth in the sex industry.

Unemployment has been cited by many prostitutes as the reason teenage workers engage in sex work.

Many of these girls are said to be prone to HIV/AIDs and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
