Opinion: Idle Amidu Playing Political Mischief

Mr. Martin Amidu

Ghana’s Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, is attracting attention over his inexplicable bitter conduct against the NDC’s flag-bearer John Mahama in these final days of campaign towards Ghana’s crucial general elections next month. One of such conducts is the bizarre statement he issued, daring the former President to present himself before him for interrogation over the Airbus allegations.

The tone of Mr. Amidu’s statement released on Monday 9th November, 2020 and its content have clearly given away the ill-motive behind Amidu’s tirades against the former President. The statement coming after a similar conduct in the Agyapa report which the former President took issues with and referred to it as ‘stupidity’ shows the Special Prosecutor is determined to execute an agendum against the former President to ensure he does not get to become the President of the country in favour of his protégé and master, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Right from the headline, Mr. Amidu presented himself as a bitter man using public office to perpetuate CONDEMNABLE VENDETTA against his ‘enemy’. It is untenable to invite no less a person than the former President of the Republic who is within jurisdiction by a disrespectful press release rather than a formal invitation properly addressed to him. This behaviour confirms Mr. Mahama’s description of the Special Prosecutor as a coward. Amidu has all the powers to initiate investigations into the so-called Airbus issue without the nuances and gimmicks he adopted ostensibly to disgrace and derail the chances of the NDC flag-bearer in the coming elections.

I therefore agree with lawyer Edudzi Tamakloe who on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday 9th November, 2020 referred to the Special Prosecutor as Akufo-Addo’s invisible tool tasked to perform the hatchet job against his opponent for political gains in the manner Donald Trump influenced the Ukranian President to investigate Hunther Biden in order to smear his father, Joe Biden and damage him politically before the crucial American elections.

Mr. Tamakloe recounted how Akufo-Addo directed and is still influencing the Special Prosecutor to pursue the former President even though they both know there was nothing to achieve in this wild goose chase except political mischief.

The fourth paragraph of Mr. Amidu’s vindictive press thesis confirms the clear political intention of his. The paragraph directly sought to insult the intelligence of the former President and to invite the public not to vote for him. But curiously the action of the self-acclaimed long-serving-public-servant cum corruption crusader appears to be illogical here. The recent actions of the ‘wise’ Special Prosecutor are disturbingly at variance with his own claims that the cardinal principle in security and intelligence states that, “caution is the better part of valour”.

One should be wondering why he threw caution to the wind and chose to stir controversy in a heated political period where critical and highly charged general elections and national security are at stake. Did the Special Prosecutor forget this principle momentarily when issuing the Agyapa report and the press statement?

In the same paragraph the inherent wisdom of ‘wise’ Amidu which teaches him the conducive time to apply certain law and order actions to ensure national security, failed to prompt him to quickly dispose of this matter long before this election year but rather put him in slumber since 2017 and only woke him up at an unconducive time like this to begin applying his ‘wisdom’. It is difficult to understand how Amidu’s venture into a public trial of the former President now will promote national security because it is clearly contrary to his own lofty ‘wisdom’ in maintaining national security.

Above all, the laughable conclusion of the Special Prosecutor’s press statement that his Agyapa report shows no one can use him against another person again exposes his hypocrisy and dishonesty. As stated by Lawyer Edudzi in the interview referred to above, it was Nana Akufo-Addo who referred the Airbus matter to him. Having written to the British Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and getting ignored for lack of substance, he was compelled to engage in various shenanigans against the former President which has also failed to yield any substance so far.

There is evidence of cases referred to his office against corrupt appointees of this fraudulent Akufo-Addo-led government which the Special Prosecutor failed to investigate. The scandals involving the Metro Mass Transit Ltd, the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company, the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST), the Premix Fuel among others have been referred to Mr. Amidu but no action has been taken on them. There is no better reason to give for this anomaly but an obvious dictation by the President to avoid exposing his government’s corruption.

As it stands now, Martin Amidu should simply join the NPP campaign team instead of remaining idle and throwing needless political jabs that neither befit his office nor benefit the state that spends hugely on him and his office.
