I was born ten years after Ghana attained independence from colonial rule. My parents and the history books I have read make me understand that Ghanaians felt the actual meaning of liberation.
The jubilation, the hilarious choruses, the ecstatic mood that engulfed the whole country was ubiquitous and indescribable. The whole nation was filled with happiness and triumph.
Ghanaians experienced real freedom. Freedom from dictatorship, oppression, slavery, humiliation, gagging, racism, deprivation etc.
History tells us that some Danquah / Busia traitors and collaborators worked closely with these colonisers to suppress and oppress their people. Today, after years of independence, Akufo-Addo is visiting similar and even worse tendencies on Ghanaians.
Ghanaians decided mercifully to try Akufo-Addo after they realised he had struggled through many defeats within his own party and also against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Ghanaians also decided to test his persona as some close pals of his had negatively advertised him. For example, Mr. Kofi Koomson and Former President Kufuor have both suggested that Akufo-Addo was too violent and wicked to be made President of Ghana.
Between 2017 and 2020, Ghanaians should conclude for themselves whether Mr. Kofi Koomson and Co. were right or wrong. Akufo-Addo’s divisive nature is non-contestable. His double standard nature is common public knowledge, his naturally violent attributions have been proven beyond doubt, his deceitful and double-tongued personality is unsurpassed.
Under Akufo-Addo, the level of insecurity in the country is at its highest. Teachers and their heads are gagged in order not to discuss the anomalies of the Free SHS. Professionals like doctors, engineers, labour unions are intimidated. Akufo-Addo’s vindictiveness has led to divisions in the Ghana Armed Forces, leading to low morale in the service. It is same with the Police Service. Unqualified and New Patriotic Party (NPP) thugs have been recruited into the security services and providing unprofessional service which is dangerous to the citizenry. These unprofessional thugs in the security services have been deployed to intimidate and molest citizens.
Under Akufo-Addo, Ghana is gradually developing a gun culture. This is inimical to our peaceful nature. The Ghanaian media is under siege. Journalists are constantly hounded and don’t feel safe. In fact, some journalists have been killed and others threatened with death.
Under Akufo- Addo, some of the things our forefathers fought against for us to become independent are gradually resurfacing. Therefore, the 2020 election is a vote for freedom from tribalism, freedom from professionals being gagged, political violence, media terrorism and killing of journalists; freedom from tyranny, restoration of sanity in our security services etc.
No one is perfect but Akufo-Addo as President has made John Mahama a saint. John Mahama as President did not qualify to be a brand in Ghana because he served the country as an ordinary citizen. He was criticised and vilified continuously. But he took every criticism in good faith and sometimes responded in humility. He was not a braggart.
But Akufo-Addo’s abysmal performance has made and conferred on John Mahama a global positive brand.
Fellow Ghanaians, please let’s vote wisely for change. Let’s vote for all the freedoms we need as Ghanaians to love our country more. Akufo-Addo is destroying our peaceful Ghana.
