Former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to place strong emphasis on its leadership selection process as part of the ongoing constitutional review.
Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom on Thursday, April 17, Osei-Owusu highlighted the need for consensus on the party’s internal leadership selection procedures, stressing that such unity is crucial for the NPP’s future stability and direction.
“For me, the most critical thing now is that, in the end, we should have some consensus on the way forward. The critical issue if you ask me is our processes of selecting leaders,” he said.
He underscored that while the process of reaching consensus may vary, what truly matters is the shared agreement that emerges. “It doesn’t matter how we get to that. Once we get to a consensus, we will use it to build our party and move forward with it,” he added.
Osei-Owusu’s comments come in the wake of the NPP’s recent decision to form a nine-member committee tasked with reviewing the party’s constitution. The move follows recommendations made in the post-election report by the Oquaye Committee after the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections.
The constitutional review committee was established during an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, April 16.
