The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed concern over the delay by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in officially presenting their running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, to the Manhyia Palace.
He says unlike the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which promptly presented Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) after his selection, the NDC had shown reduced engagement with Manhyia since leaving power.
The Asante Mornach made these remarks when the running mate of the opposition party Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang made a trip to the palace to officially seek his blessings ahead of the 2024 polls.
He emphasized the need for continued respect and engagement with traditional institutions.
“It seems that ever since the NDC lost power, there has been a distance between us. I recall when Professor Naana Jane was announced as the running mate, but the party was yet to officially present her to me”, Otumfuo subtly stated.
“It’s perplexing because, despite the New Patriotic Party (NPP) being the last to name Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as their running mate, they promptly presented him to my office, whereas the NDC hasn’t done the same”, he added.
The King nonetheless prayed for the NDC running mate, wished her well and urged the party to trumpet their policies to Ghanaians.
“Your days as Vice Chancellor of the University of Capecoast has been phenomenal. [And] I admire your humility. My son John Mahama has selected you again because he trust that you will secure victory for the party. I urge you to work hard in humility and explain your policies to Ghanaians”.
Otumfuo further underscored the significance of a free, fair and transparent election to a peaceful election.
“Be honest so that peace reigns after the election. If that happens the loser will accept the results and so will the winner. Let’s unite and go into the elections.”
His Majesty affirmed that God is the kingmaker and he is resolute in his purpose.
“God makes king. If it’s not in the purpose of God for you to win an election, you will lose no matter what but if he makes you king then rest assured that it’s yours. In that regard, exercise patience and let peace reign.
