Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko have been selected by Parliament to compete in the first-ever Democracy Cup, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the legislative body.
Set to take place on Friday, July 5, 2024, the event will also feature a curtain-raiser match between Members of Parliament and former Black Stars players at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, made the announcement in the parliamentary chamber, revealing that the winner of the Hearts vs. Kotoko match would have the opportunity to play against United States-based club DC United in Washington.
“This parliament has achieved remarkable progress, leading to the establishment of the Democracy Cup with the support of our partners and stakeholders,” stated Rt. Hon. Bagbin, underscoring the significance of Parliament’s contributions over the years.
Last year marked the 30th anniversary since Parliament’s inception in 1993, coinciding with the adoption of the 1992 Constitution and the restoration of democratic governance in Ghana.
In addition to the Democracy Cup, commemorative activities will include parliamentary sessions, debates, peace walks, and various recreational events to celebrate the milestone.
