Patrick Yaw Boamah, the sitting Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, has been officially declared the winner of the constituency’s parliamentary election. He secured 21,099 votes, defeating his closest contender, Baba Sadiq of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who garnered 19,368 votes.

This announcement came after a ruling by the High Court in Accra directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation of results for several constituencies, including Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South, by January 6, 2025.

In a related development, Charles Forson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was confirmed as the winner of the Tema Central constituency after a recount at two outstanding polling stations. Forson obtained 18,870 votes, narrowly edging out NDC’s Ebi Bright, who secured 18,815 votes. Frederick Aniagyei came third with 209 votes. The recount revealed 37,894 valid votes, with 144 ballots rejected, making the total votes cast 38,038.

The court ruling followed mandamus applications filed by NPP candidates, compelling the EC to finalize the collation of incomplete results. Justice Forson Agyapong, who presided over the case, highlighted the legal basis for mandamus applications. He explained that applicants must demonstrate a failure to perform a public duty and show significant prejudice caused by this failure.

In the case of Okaikwei Central, Justice Agyapong noted that the EC had only declared results from 110 out of 141 polling stations. He ordered the inclusion of the outstanding results to ensure a complete and accurate declaration. The judge issued similar directives for the other constituencies affected, ensuring that all missing polling station results would be incorporated into the final tallies.

This decision underscores the importance of transparency and completeness in the electoral process, ensuring that all valid votes are accounted for in the final outcomes.
