Ghana’s technical advisor Chris Hughton says players born abroad switching nationality to play for Ghana Ghana did not do so because of the World Cup.
According to him, players are switching nationality to play for Ghana considered a long term future and not because they only want to play at the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar later this year.
Inaki Williams, Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer, Stephan Ambrosius, and Patric Pfeiffer, Mohammed Salisu and Tariq Lamptey, have all indicated that they are available to play for the Black Stars.
Our of the six players who recently decided to don the famous Black Stars jersey, five have been handed a debut call-up to play for Ghana later this month in France.
Five players are foreign-born, and only Southampton star Mohammed Salisu was born in Ghana and knows the Ghana culture.
After many Ghanaians have lambasted the players and the FA for such a move, especially after Ghana had secured a world cup, the technical advisor holds a diff view to all this brouhaha.
“The nation wants us to have the best squad. They want us to have the best opportunity to do well in the world cup and to do well in the world cup, we need the best squad,” he said in an interview with TV3.
“Anybody that has now shown an allegiance to represent the Black Stars, it’s not just about tomorrow, it’s about next year, the year after and the year after going into the future. Anybody that is committing is not just committing to the world cup, they are committing to the future.”
